What is Endodontics?
Endodontics refers to the branch of dentistry involving dental pulp and tissues that surround the roots of your teeth. Endodontic treatment treats the soft pulp tissue inside the tooth, and an endodontist is a dentist who specializes in saving infected teeth.
The most common endodontics treatment is the root canal procedure, but here at Symmetry Dental, we offer several others as well.
Root Canal and Root Canal Retreatment
When your tooth becomes infected and inflamed, you may need a root canal. During this procedure, your infected tooth is cleaned, shaped, and filled after the infected nerve is removed. A filling is then placed on top of your tooth to keep it functional, and a crown is typically placed on the tooth three to six months later for added protection.
Not every toothache will lead to a root canal, but if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend scheduling an appointment at Symmetry Dental:
- Swelling or pain in the gums
- Sudden sharp pain near the tooth
- Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
- Pain when you bite down
- Tooth discoloration
Also referred to as root end surgery, an apicoectomy is a procedure that’s often necessary if you get an infection after a root canal. If Dr. Adatia recommends an apicoectomy, it means your tooth can’t be saved by a conventional root canal treatment.
During this procedure, the tooth’s root tip is removed and a root end cavity is prepared and filled with a biocompatible material. The purpose of this is to preserve the function of your tooth so you can avoid having it extracted.
Microscopic Endo refers to a dental microscope that can greatly enhance the ability to view even the smallest details inside your teeth. By magnifying vision up to 25 times that of the naked eye, the dental microscope can be used to both diagnose and treat dental concerns.
Here are a few benefits of the dental microscope:
- Preserving your tooth structure
- Finding hidden canals
- Locating and removing separated instruments
- Improving the quality of the exam by improving ergonomics for the dentist
