A Reliable Tooth Replacement Solution
The loss of teeth as an adult is not uncommon, many suffer from decay or injuries that result in missing teeth. For a large percentage of these people, dentures are a practical solution to provide relief and restore function.
Properly fitting dentures will allow you to speak and enjoy food without issue. They’ll counter the premature aging effects of letting your muscles recede into the space left by missing teeth, preserving the shape of your face. With customized dentures, you’ll enjoy the confidence that comes from a natural-looking smile that will last for years with proper care.
Types of Dentures
Dentures are sets of artificial teeth which take the place of missing teeth in your mouth. They’re divided into two main types: Complete Dentures and Partial Dentures.
Complete dentures replace an entire arch of teeth, top or bottom. There are two categories of complete dentures: conventional and immediate.
With conventional complete dentures, any remaining natural teeth are removed from the top or bottom row and allowed to heal completely over a period of about 12 weeks. In the meantime, a custom set of artificial teeth is crafted to be placed over your healed gums.
Immediate complete dentures are available to be placed on the same day that any remaining teeth are removed. While this advantage will restore your smile right away and allow you to eat textured food more easily, there’s a tendency for immediate dentures to fit more loosely after gums shrink during healing. For this reason, immediate complete dentures may eventually need to be replaced with conventional complete dentures.
If you’re missing a section of teeth, partial dentures can be the answer to restoring comfort and function to your mouth. Partial dentures are created by fusing artificial teeth to an acrylic base that matches your surrounding gum tissue and fits snugly in the gap left by missing teeth. Partial denture treatment is less invasive than complete dentures and affords many of the same benefits. Your smile and ability to eat and speak with ease are restored, with the added advantage of supporting your remaining natural teeth and distributing the stress on your jaw.
Advantages of Dentures
There are a number of reasons why dentures are a popular treatment option for replacing missing teeth.
Patients are often surprised by how good their dentures look in their mouths and what an impressive smile they can show their loved ones. Confidence is even increased when your new teeth aren’t showing, the muscles of your face will no longer droop or sink into the gaps left by missing teeth.
After a short time in dentures, you’ll find that the function of your teeth and mouth is greatly increased compared to getting by with missing teeth. You’ll be able to chew foods more easily, speak more clearly, and smile without reservation.
Compared to tooth replacement options like dental implants, dentures remain the most price efficient option for addressing missing teeth. While there are of course advantages to dental implants if they can fit within your budget, dentures remain the most affordable option for up to 15 years of service from a set. If you’re hoping to get dental implants in the future, complete or partial dentures may be a good interim option to restore function in the meantime.
